The Question Is...
Animation
November 2023
This animation interprets Henry David Thoreau’s quote, “The question is not what you look at, but what you see.” Using a single color and a chain of morphing illustrations, it explores how perception changes through continuous transformation. The minimal palette keeps the focus on the moment when observation shifts into interpretation.
Process
I began with a rough animatic in Procreate to map the flow of transitions, then refined the drawings and vectorized the final frames in Illustrator. All 230 cells were risoprinted to give the animation a tactile, imperfect quality. After scanning, I cleaned up the prints and assembled them into motion in Photoshop, merging analogue texture with digital timing to highlight the theme of shifting perception.
